Bodies in Motion, Architecture in Action

Odyssey Elementary School

Odyssey Elementary School was the first in a series of elementary schools for the Davis School District. The school is two stories, organized around a central Commons/Dining area, with classroom areas organized into two, multi-story wings. Each wing houses an integrated collaboration space that supports a project-based curriculum. One of the primary goals during the design of the school was to provide an integrated theme, in this case, “Bodies in Motion”. The exterior of the building has undulating metal panels that reference the scales of a fish to evoke motion.

VCBO’s K-12 team is dedicated to innovative design solutions for 21st Century learning. Since its inception, Odyssey Elementary has received 10 awards and has been featured in both local and national publications for its innovative design solutions and commitment to sustainability. The school also  achieved “Net Zero” status and was the first building in the state of Utah to receive a LEED Gold Certification.

Odyssey Elementary’s unique approach to flexible work spaces, collaboration, and an open learning environment demonstrates how methodical and innovative design can prepare young people for success.
